Eligibility Requirements for Religious Worker Visa and Associated Fees

What are the religious eligibility requirements for the R-1 visa?

Applicant must be a member of a recognized religious denomination for 2 years prior to applying. Previous work experience is not required.

What are the role requirements?

The position must involve inherently religious work such as Torah education, Kashrus and Halachic supervision, Jewish outreach, or other religious-based roles.


Role must be a minimum of 20 hours a week.


Admin roles within a religious organization typically do not qualify unless the role is directly related to religious work. Role cannot be performed by secular person.

What are the compensation requirements?

Compensation can be satisfied with any of the following: salary, housing arrangements, room and board, stipend, and other non-monetary support.

How long is the R-1 visa valid for?

Initial stay: up to 30 months.

One extension: up to 30 more months.


Total maximum: 5 years.


Spouses and children under 21 may get R-2 (dependent) status but they cannot work in the U.S. under R-1.

What are the current processing times for the R-1 visa?

Regular processing: 4-5 months

Premium processing: 15 days

What are the government and legal fees for the R-1 visa?

Government filing fees

Regular processing: $510

Premium processing is additional $1685

Prepare and file R-1 petition: $5000 (discounted pricing available for multiple petitions)


In the event of a Request for Evidence (RFE), an additional flat rate of $1500 will apply.


Fees can be paid by either the sponsoring organization or applicant.
